Chapter 45

Mollie

Thursday, Day 15

Bakerville, Wyoming

“Knock, knock.” I lightly wrap on the doorframe of Katie’s room. Katie is on the bed, dressed in sweats and a T-shirt, lounging on top of the covers. Leo is sitting on the chair beside her bed. He immediately stands when I step in.

“Leo, you can stay seated. I was just popping in to see if Katie needs anything or if she wanted to walk around. There’s a dinner and community meeting this evening. Jake and I are going to go. You think you’re up to it?”

“I’d like to, but I don’t think so,” she answers softly. “I’m glad you’re here, though. We were… we were just talking about you.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah…” Katie starts, but Leo puts his hand on her arm and says, “Uh… how about I go see if Jake is available? Katie and I wanted to talk with you two. Do you have a few minutes to wait?”

Hmmm. Interesting. “Sure.”

“I’ll be right back.”

“Here, Mom. Take the chair. Does Belinda know you are off your crutches?”

“Yes, I just have to be careful.”

Katie nods, then starts asking me questions of no consequence about the homestead. I so want to ask what is going on but manage to hold my tongue. Patience is not my strong suit, so it’s a definite struggle.

Leo soon returns, with Jake in tow. Questions mark Jake’s face. I give a slight lift of my right shoulder as if to say, I don’t know, but I have my suspicions. Jake gives a nod and tries to contain a smile.

Leo steps to the other side of the bed, then sits on the edge next to Katie.

“So… uh, thanks for joining us… we, uh…” Leo stammers.

“Leo, it’s okay. I think they already know,” Katie says quietly.

I try hard to look innocent.

“We don’t really know,” Jake says. “Go ahead, Leo.”

“Yes… sir, uh, Jake. Mollie. I think you both know I love Katie… more than anything. She’s… she’s nothing short of amazing. And when I thought we might lose her…” He shakes his head, gulping in a breath. “But she’s fine. She’s going to make a full recovery. And I want, more than anything, for her to spend the rest of her life with me, as my wife. Can I… do I… will you give me your permission to marry her?”

The smile and love on Katie’s face during Leo’s stammering speech is adoring. Even now, looking from Jake to me, her entire face is lit up from the inside.

“Katie, this is what you want?” Jake asks.

“More than anything. I love him like cray-cray.”

“Cray-cray… Okay. Well, good then. Mollie? You look like you are about to bust wide open, so I guess you’re on board.”

I go to Katie for a hug. I’m crying; she’s crying.

Finally, Jake says, “Yeah… Leo, welcome to the family.”
